Major Boric Acid Players

According to a recent report, the boric acid market is fragmented with numerous players. These vendors compete on R&D, quality, price, innovations, marketing strategies, market expansion, investments, and distribution networks. Some vendors have high investment capabilities, and they constantly focus on increasing their production capacities.

Although the increase in demand from developing countries will offer immense growth opportunities, the threat of substitutes will challenge the growth of the market participants. To make the most of the opportunities, market vendors should focus more on the growth prospects in the fast-growing segments while maintaining their positions in the slow-growing segments.

Minera Santa Rita

Minera Santa Rita S.R.L. (MSR) is a family-owned company dedicated to the extraction, production, and international marketing of Borates, its derivatives, and other specialties. The company’s main priorities are quality, customer service, efficiency, and environmental protection. Nowadays, MSR develops several lines of derivative products for specific applications.

Consolidated as a Holding Group, the company provides employment to 200 workers and indirect employment to more than 600 people. Their production strategy is based on vertical integration of the supply chain with exclusive contractors in mineral production, medium-distance transportation, and the manufacturing of its main input: sulfuric acid. The company exports more than two-thirds of its production.

Minera Santa Rita Boric Acid Products

Boric Acid MSR:
Boric acid MSR is a white, crystalline, and free-flowing product used in the ceramic industry, fiberglass, borosilicate glass, wood protection, cellulose insulation, metallurgy, flame retardants, corrosion inhibitors, and in agriculture as fertilizer and growth regulator.

Applications and benefits

Agriculture and Fertilizer
Boron fertilizers are usually mixed with other compounds or NPK fertilizers to correct boron deficiency.

Corrosion Inhibitor
Different Boric Acid compositions can be used as corrosion inhibitors and anti-freezing solutions (mixed with Ethylene Glycol in automobile motor cooling systems) and in brewing, heat treating, hydraulic fluids, and metallic products.

Wood Preservatives and Pesticides
Borates and specially Boric Acid, are very effective in controlling and eliminating insects and fungi. Even though they are not harmful to mammals, they are toxic to cockroaches, ants, scarabs, larvae, and other insects.

Flame-Retardant
Boric Acid is an effective chemical as a flame retardant. It is used on an ample array of products: wood, plywood, textile products, cotton, paper, and cellulose.

Glass and Fibre Glass
Borosilicate chemicals replace sodium oxide as a replacement of sodium oxide, Boric Oxide is a Boron compound that is an important component in optical glass industries as they are used to reduce thermal and mechanical shocks while increasing chemical resistance and durability.

Ceramics
Boron compounds significantly reduce the melting point and can be used as essential ingredients in the production of ceramic frits and borosilicate glazes. Boric acid controls the coefficient of expansion to ensure that the glaze remains fixed with the body without cracking or distorting.

Metallurgy

Boron is used as sealing for non-ferrous metals and as a deoxidizer and detoxifier in Metallurgy.

Because it absorbs neutrons, it is used in the production of steep. Traces of boron in steel increase its strength. Boron also eliminates impurities in metallurgist systems, resulting in a high-purity material used in electrical conductors.

Pharmaceuticals and Cosmetics

Boric Acid is recognized for its application as a pH buffer and moderate antiseptic agent, and emulsifier. It is a component of ointments, mouthwashes, eye drops, bath salts, creams, and shampoos. It can give the skin a cooling sensation due to its good thermal conductivity. It is also known that boron compounds made with the 10B isotope selectively destroy cancer cells.

US Borax

In 1872, borate deposits were discovered in California’s Death Valley. Several companies sprung up in the region to mine borates. By 1890, they were mostly consolidated into the Pacific Coast Borax Company. In 1956, the Pacific Borax Company merged with the United States Potash Corporation to form U.S. Borax. U.S. Borax, part of Rio Tinto, is a global leader in the supply and science of borates—naturally occurring minerals containing boron and other elements. 1,000 people are serving 500 customers with more than 1,700 delivery locations globally. They supply 30% of the world’s need for refined borates from our world-class mine in Boron, California, about 100 miles northeast of Los Angeles.

US Borax Boric Acid Products

Optibor

Optibor boric acids (H3BO3) are pure, multi-functional sources of 20 Mule Team® Borax boric oxide (B2O3). Apart from Neobor® (borax pentahydrate), Optibor is the most widely used industrial borate. Optibor is theoretically composed of boric oxide and water. It can be purchased as granules or powder, both stable under normal conditions, free-flowing, and easily handled using air or mechanical conveying. In solution, the product is mildly acidic.

From reducing melting temperatures in fiberglass production to inhibiting corrosion in fuel additives, Optibor has many uses in numerous industries.

This hard, glassy, granular product is water-soluble but much slower than boric acid and reacts exothermically when wetted. When exposed to the atmosphere, it slowly absorbs water, reverting to boric acid. This pure anhydrous form is ideal where boric acid is required without metals.

A powerful tool in producing specialty glasses, ceramics, enamels, and welding/soldering fluxes. 20 Mule Team® Borax boric oxide, the pure form of B2O3, is ideal for scenarios that require B2O3 without the presence of metals or when water would be detrimental.
