Boron in Green Sodium Batteries

Boron inclusive technology shows how we can harness the power from seawater to bring zero-carbon energy worldwide. Decarbonization has been a goal for quite some time, and it seems like this year, governments will finally agree on stricter regulations that would make it possible to achieve this objective by 2050 or sooner.  Boron has been working to bring sustainable energy sources for all, and Boron and Hydropower technology is an excellent example of achieving this goal.

Boron in Bioimaging: Bioimaging applications for boron dyes are manifold. Studies show that various boron-centered chemical modification compounds - , 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene - use detection reagents which absorb light energy, altering optical and bioimaging properties for ease of analysis and interpretation.

Vegetable Garden: An Ultimate Guide To Using Boron

Vegetable Garden

Gardeners looking to add boron to their vegetable garden can do so in various ways. This helpful mineral plays a vital role in plant growth and development and can help improve overall yields. Learn how to add boron to the vegetable garden. Understand the benefits that this mineral can provide not only in the soil but also in the transportation and nutritional value boron brings to garden vegetables, and plants for that matter.

The Fascinating World of Tourmaline

Tourmaline

Tourmaline is a group of boron silicate minerals with similar physical properties and a standard crystal structure but the minerals vary widely in chemical composition. A wide variety of compositions, trace elements, and shade facilities causes tourmalines to occur in more colors and color combinations than any other mineral group.

Ulexite: The Wonder Mineral

Ulexite

Ulexite, a boron mineral found in the American southwest, is recognized for its intense, pearly white color. This stone first garnered attention in 1840 and is named after the German chemist George Ludwig Ulex, who first explained its chemical composition.

The Economics of Boron Production

Boron - Eti Maden

The primary source of both boron and borate is the mining of minerals that contain it. Borax, for example, was originally mined from a dry lake in Turkey before being found to be more profitable at other locations such as Alaska where deposits can be located within close access to large mineral processing plants. The world production amounts to a total of 2,750,000 tons by 1994 with 800 thousand metric tons coming directly from those mines containing 250 million kilograms (kg) or 0.3% B ore which had been processed into commercial products like sodium tetraborate pentahydrate. Most of the...

APPLICATIONS

APPLICATIONS, Chemistry, SCIENCE

Boron in Fireworks

Fireworks and pyrotechnics are used frequently in festivals and celebrations, as well as in military operations and military training. Barium is the chemical that gives off a green light in fireworks, but it is toxic. This can be resolved by substituting barium nitrate with Boron carbide. Boron carbide ticks all the boxes in pyrotechnics with its long burn times and high luminous intensity. There are a few concerns in terms of toxicity and environmental data to adopting it. Moreover, Boron carbide is cheaper than barium nitrate and is in plentiful supply.

APPLICATIONS

Borates in Paints

Borates in Paints: Borates are widely used in paints, coatings, and printing inks as buffering agents. They also provide flame retardant, anti-corrosive, and anti-bacteria protective benefits, applied in marine and aviation coatings for example. Boric acid, borax decahydrate, borax, zinc borate, and perborates/metal borates are compounds most used in paints and coatings.

Country Profile of Russia

Country Profile of Russia: Russia is the fourth-largest supplier of borates to global markets, which present about 12% of the global total, with boric acid as the main export. The current Russia, Ukraine conflict is not having a noticeable impact on supply and production in the short term for borates supply. Still, Putin is considering sanctions on a wide range of minerals and finished products for export.

Origins of Boron

Origins of Boron. Boron exists naturally in very small amounts on Earth. It is found mainly in the earth's crust in boric acid (HBO(OH)), but can also exist in compounds with various elements including fluorine, oxygen, and sodium. Boron makes up about 2.4% of the total of the crust.

Borax: The Safe and Effective Detergent

Borax is used in cleaning products because it helps remove dirt and grime. But we need to handle it carefully or it can be dangerous if ingested by children. Borax is a white powdery substance that is also known as sodium tetraborate. Although sodium tetraborate is a salt of boric acid, it is not an acid, it’s a salt.

Rio Tinto Mine Serbia Lithium Boron Licences Revoked

Rio Tinto Mine. The Serbian government has finally revoked Rio Tinto's licenses for lithium exploration in Serbia in the latter part of January 2022. The government gave in to the protesters who have been opposed to the Anglo-Australian mining company's project on environmental grounds. Last year, the company committed to the project as global miners push for metals necessary to transition to green energy. This includes lithium which is used in the production of electric vehicle batteries. The project was already suspended in December 2021 due to environmental deterioration and forced displacement concerns.
